“Catania, ah, Catania was beautiful at the beginning of the twentieth century. There was a smell of powder in the streets, as delicate as the faces of the women who wore it … In addition there was a pleasant smell of leather harnesses due to the large number of horse-drawn carriages that ran from end to end of the course”.
This was written by Vitaliano Brancati in his story “Singular adventure of Francesco Maria” in 1941.
A beautiful and modern city that, at the beginning of the 1900s, began a major modernization and urban renewal plan. In the early 1900s the cultural ferment in the city is of great intensity and, among the many cultural and architectural initiatives, the new Sangiorgi Theater is inaugurated with the Bohème by Giacomo Puccini.
In this period the excavations to make the amphitheater of Piazza Stesicoro accessible began. It is the second largest amphitheater in Italy after the Colosseum in Rome.
Until the end of the 1800s the public transport of Catania was represented by horse-drawn carriages. On 12 December 1900 the first stone was laid for the construction of the electric tram workshop in via Gazometro and in 1905 the three lines of the city tram service were inaugurated.
In the same period, about a hundred dirt roads were modernized.
Also the constructions of the Liberty style villas began (among the most beautiful in the city: Villa Manganelli, Villa del Grado and Villa Bonajuto in Corso Italia; Palazzo Rosa in Via XXV Aprile, Palazzo delle Poste in Via Etnea, Villa Miranda in Via XX Settembre ) that transformed Catania into one of the most modern cities of the time and Castello Ursino became a great national civic museum.
The promenade (in the dialect of Catania “Passiaturi”) was reconstructed starting from Piazza dei Martiri and arriving at the current Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII.
